Vercoiran is an ancient village made up of hamlets and farms on both banks of the Ouvèze, 9 km from Buis-les-Baronnies.
The first traces of human settlement date back to the Neolithic period. Pseudo-Ionian ceramics have also been found from this period.
The old village is perched on a rocky hillside plateau overlooking the Ouvèze gorges. To reach it, take the D546 and follow a narrow road upwards, winding through fields of apricot trees. This brings you to a parking lot with a chapel (quartier de la Viste). All that remains of the original chapels is Notre-Dame des Champs, which has become a local Marian pilgrimage site during the Nativity of the Virgin celebrations every September. Next to it stands a rocky outcrop that gives access to the old village.
Beneath the ruins of the feudal castle, only a single stony street remains. Vercoiran offers visitors some of the region's finest stone houses, rebuilt on former sheepfolds. Vercoiran has made the most of its topography: the old village, set high up (640m for the castle), was once home to pastoral life, while in the valley below, various farms were built to grow coarse grains, hemp and madder. Today, in June and July, this location also allows us to observe the lavender fields that have given way to most other crops.
The town hall is located in the hamlet of Le Moulin, at the bottom of the old village, on the edge of the main road.
