The rounded hill of Montclar-sur-Gervanne sprouts like a mushroom in the middle of the Gervanne Valley. This veritable lookout point leaves us pensive... Also worth a visit is the Château de Vachères at the foot of the village.
The former site of a castle, the 12th-century Romanesque church of Saint-Marcel sits atop its summit. The village is protected behind its 14th-century surrounding wall, called "vintain" (vintain) after the tax used for its upkeep. It still retains one of its two gates, the Porte Bayard, at the main entrance to the village, and two round towers. The captivating character of this mound is admirable from Vaugelas, a remarkable hamlet, particularly during the descent via the GR9 hiking trail coming from the Vercors National Park!
At the foot of the village, the Château de Vachères, a magnificent landmark listed as a Historic Monument, is open by reservation for guided tours. It also hosts concerts and other festivities. Find all the information on:: https://chateaudevacheres.fr/
