Description
The low hardness of the rock facilitated the excavation of a set of habitats at the foot of the molasse hill.
Around a hundred caves, dating from various periods, have been identified. Most are hidden by modern houses, but some are easily accessible from the top of the village.
A dozen troglodyte dwellings, seven of which are still visible, bear witness to the presence of quarrymen or other residents from the 17th
century. The last occupations date back to the early 20th century.
This remains one of the largest troglodyte sites in the region, hence the name "Châteauneuf, le village aux 100 troglodytes" ("Châteauneuf, the village of 100 troglodytes").
