A delicious speciality of the Vercors region, the Grenoble walnut captures all the richness of the Alps in its shell. Whether used in sweet or savory recipes, Grenoble Walnuts offer an authentic, irresistible taste in every bite.
The Grenoble walnut, emblematic of our region since the 10th century, is much more than just a nut. Passionately cultivated in the alpine landscapes of Drôme, Isère and Savoie, it was the first nut in the world to be awarded an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) in 1938, before becoming an Appellation d'Origine Protégée (AOP) in 1996. This label guarantees not only geographical origin, but also ancestral know-how and exceptional quality, preserved from generation to generation.
But what makes Grenoble walnuts so special? It's the unique combination of terroir and climate. Grown in orchards situated between plains and hills, at altitudes of up to 800 meters, this nut draws its rich flavor from the fertile soils of the Isère valley and the ideal climatic conditions of the Alps. This privileged terroir, combined with environmentally-friendly growing methods, gives Grenoble Walnuts their inimitable taste, crunchy texture and exceptional nutritional qualities.
The three flagship varieties of Noix de Grenoble - Franquette, Mayette and Parisienne - are each selected for their unique characteristics. Franquette, hardy and subtle, is the most widespread. The older Mayette is prized for its generous size and delicate flavor. As for the Parisienne, its roundness and white flesh make it a particularly prized delicacy.
Since the 11th century, walnuts have played an essential role in the local economy. In the past, it provided the oil needed for food and lighting, and was used to make wine, cakes and bread, as well as medicines and tinctures. Even today, a prefectoral decree sets the harvest date each year, which generally begins in mid-September, underlining the importance of this tradition in the region.
What would you say to discovering this fascinating history and tasting the Grenoble walnut where it was born? As you stroll through the Vercors mountains, stop off at a local restaurant where chefs are reinventing traditional dishes by sublimating this exceptional nut. Whether in a crunchy salad, a gourmet dessert or simply as an accompaniment to a local cheese, the Grenoble walnut reveals all its aromatic complexity.
