La mode au 17e siècle
As part of the Sévigné Year.

By Yvane Jacob.
Lecture followed by a Q&A session.
n the 17th century, France turned fashion into an instrument of power. At the court of Louis XIV, garments, fabrics, accessories, and finery played a key role in staging royal power, turning French magnificence into a model for European courts. Luxury became a tool for geopolitical influence: court fashions spread to Paris and the provinces, imposing new silhouettes and customs for both women and men. Madame de Sévigné, an attentive observer of the novelties, elegance, and splendor of her time, stands as an exceptional witness to this booming clothing culture. Through her letters, she allows us to closely follow what people wore and what clothing revealed about the society of the Grand Siècle (Great Century).
