La chapelle Notre Dame d'Allan
The Chapelle Notre Dame d'Allan, also known as the "Barbara Chapel", is located in the heart of the countryside, just a stone's throw from the old village of Allan.
The church was first mentioned on May 11, 1183, in a bull issued by Pope Lucius III, under the name "Sancta Maria de Alono": it was a Benedictine priory dependent on the Ile Barbe abbey in Lyon, which explains its name.
This is a Gallo-Roman site, where fragments of dolia and tegulae mingle with medieval masonry.
The chapel's parish functions were probably superseded in the 12th century by the castral chapel of Saint Jean-Baptiste, built by the Adhemar family near their castle. Partly destroyed during the Wars of Religion and converted into a farm shed, the chapel was saved in 1871 by Abbé Jouve, who had it partially repaired.
The chapel was listed as a historic monument on July 27, 1924, and underwent further external consolidation in 1928.
