Eglise Notre Dame de Beauvert
12th-century Romanesque church in Sainte-Jalle, built on an ancient sanctuary. A Cluniac gem with rich sculpted decorations, closed to the public since 2022 for restoration. Winner of the Prix du Public Rhône-Alpes 2024.
The Notre-Dame-de-Beauvert church in Sainte-Jalle is a remarkable example of Provençal Romanesque art. Erected in the XIIᵉ century on the foundations of a Gallo-Roman sanctuary, it preserves unique ancient elements, including a IIᵉ century inscription and altars dedicated to the Baginatiae discovered in 1999.
A former Cluniac priory, it features a three-bay nave, a transept opening onto three apses, and a sculpted portal adorned with antique motifs - oves, palmettes, acanthus and fantastical heads. The crossing is topped by a squat bell-tower, a later addition to the original structure.
Listed as a historic monument, it has unfortunately been closed to the public since 2022 due to major structural damage. Restoration is underway, made possible by local and national mobilization, including the Rhône-Alpes 2024 Public Prize, which awarded €15,000.
Its eventual reopening will enable visitors to rediscover this masterpiece in the heart of the Provencal Baronnies, combining spirituality, ancient history and Romanesque art.
