WINES, APERIITIFS AND LIQUEURS

Vineyards in the Drôme produce AOC wines and table wines. The department is fortunate to have almost ideal conditions of sunshine and rainfall needed for viticulture.

AOC COTES DU RHONE: Villages / Regional Côtes du Rhône: the varietal called Grenache produces a wine which is high in alcohol content, supple and fleshy; blended with the Syrah varietal it is worth laying down. Another blend using the Mourvèdre varietal, high in colour and in tannins, gives it an excellent bouquet. There are 3 Grands crus for this appellation:

HERMITAGE: this wine is one of the rulers of the northern Côtes du Rhône, with the Syrah varietal for red wines and Marsanne and Roussanne for white wines. Red wines with red fruit, spicy or truffle flavours are served with red meat or game and are excellent for laying down. The white wines will be perfect with white meat, fish and cheese. They can be laid down for a very long time.

CROZES-HERMITAGE: is Hemitage’s « younger brother » which often has the same characteristics as the «older brother». The white wines evoke flavours of honey and almonds; while the reds develop flavours of red fruits and spices. These wines should be drunk within two to three years.

VINSOBRES: has been the top Grand cru Côtes du Rhône from the Drôme Provençale since February 2006. Blend between Grenache and Syrah varietals it is a combination of floral and animal flavours: fresh fruit (cherry, blackcurrant) and distilled fruit (brandies), spices (pepper, vanilla) and roasted (smoked). Good for laying down.

AOC COTEAUX DU TRICASTIN: can be red, white or rosé; the reds are Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault and Mourvèdre ; whites are Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache blanc and Clairette. The reds reveal flavours of red berry fruit, some can be drunk young and chilled and others can be laid down for at least ten years The rosés are fruity and elegant and the dry whites are refreshing and full of finesse when young, tender and sweet after ageing for a few years.

AOC VINS DE DIE: Crémant de Die, Clairette de Die, Coteaux de Die : the appelation applies to still wines, Blancs de blancs, based on Clairette. But sparkling wines, Crémant de Die (based on Clairette), served as an aperitif or drunk throughout the meal and Clairette de Die (predominantly Muscat, served for aperitifs or as a dessert wine) are famous references for the Drôme.

AOC CHATILLON EN DIOIS: this vineyard produces white wines based on Aligoté and Chardonnay, developping very delicate flavours. The red wines, very easy to drink, are based on gamay, Pinot noir and Syrah.

VINS DE PAYS are produced all over the Drôme and are often made by the same wine growers who produce the more prestigious appellations. For this reason, the wine is of good quality and can be found in vins de pays from the northern hills of the Rhône valley, the county of Grignan and the Valdaine area, or the hills of the Baronnies. One can find the same flavours and tastes as in the more famous AOC wines.

APERITIFS AND LIQUEURS: walnut aperitif and liqueur, pear brandy from Upie, Anneyron and Moras en Valloire made from delicious sun-drenched fruit are of excellent quality. Eyguebelle liqueurs and fruit cordials are made from traditional plant-based recipes handed down from the monks at the Abbey of Our Lady in Aiguebelle, Montjoyer and founded in 1137, to a non-religious company which continues to use the same production methods.
